Why did we chose the Hamax caress?

We live in a German city where it is easy to move around by bicycle, Heidelberg. And before pregnancy was used to go everywhere with my bicycle. I just wanted to get some of that mobility with my baby too, so we decided to buy a Hamax Caress as a baby bicycle seat. In this post I give you all the reasons why we choose it and why it is for us the best baby bicycle seat!

1. A bicycle seat not only for babies

The Hamax Caress is not only for babies. It is for children from 9 months old until they reach around 22 Kg. It means that you can continue using it until you baby is not a baby anymore and is around 8 or 9 years old. The investment is for a long period of time. How awesome is that?

2. Reasonable price for a baby bicycle seat

Ok, it is not as cheap as the decathlon bicycle seats but it is also not too expensive. Depending on how much you are going to use it, it can be even cheaper if you compare with other baby products as baby stroller with carrycot or baby swings, which can go up to 500 eur and are just to be used for much shorter periods of time.

3. Easy to use and versatile

It is incredible easy to lock and unlock the fastening bracket and to put it on your bicycle or remove it. This makes your life specially easy when you change the seat between two or more bicycles often. It also fits on a wide variety of bikes with or without luggage carriers. It fits frame diameters from 28-40 mm.

4. It is a sturdy baby bycicle seat

Do you know when you have something in your hands and you have the feeling that it will fall into pieces once something hits it? The Hamax caress is exactly the oposite. It is a robust and persistent chair, which will not break on the first schock.

5. Adjustable to almost everything

The seat has many adjustable features:

• The seat back can be regulated to fit your child’s height.
• You can lean it until 20°, which is perfect if your child falls a sleep. Actually they even recommend not to use it in the 0°, so your child is more comfortable and it is more protective for his/her spine too.
• The footrest system can be adjusted as your child’s legs grow, additionally there is a rubber to adjust to your baby’s feet. And all these systems are very easy to regulate.

6. Safety

The hamax caress bicycle seat makes sure our baby is safe while we ride our bicycle. The footrest system doesn’t allow our baby to move his feet and thus injure himself while the bicycle moves. The shoulder paddings are hard and doesnt allow big movements. The seat belt has a lockable fastening bracket that “clicks” when it is safely looked. It is very difficult to unlock, even for an adult (this is a big advantage against the Britax Römer Jokey Comfort, which showed to be too easy to unlock, even by small children (link in German).

7. Comfort

One of the main reasons we’ve decided to purshase this baby bicycle seat was the suspension on the seat, it avoids to much pressure on our baby’s back, specially when we drive in a city like Heidelberg full of jolts. This baby bicycle seat has also integrated pading, it is not verythick but in my opinion, or in the specific case of my son, it is enough. He always sweats a lot from hsi back when seated in the baby stroller and car seat, thus for us the Hamay caress is just perfect!

Features with room for improvement

• It is possible to lock the seat to your bicycle (with or without luggage carrier) with the provided key. Which is a big advantage reducing the risk of theft. However, all Hamax caress owners have the same key, which makes it very easy to unlock and steel others as soon as you have one. Maybe an unique key could solve this issue.
• Even if the seat belt has a lockable fastening bracket very difficult to unlock (even for adults), it also has an adjustable buckle which can be extended (by the child) leaving the child’s shoulders and chest unsupported. It is not that easy to perform this extension but it can be possible for older children. Maybe an adjustable buckle on the back or under the seat would avoid any risk related to the buckle adjustment.
